Types of Door Hinges in India: Butt, Parliament, Ball Bearing, Concealed & Pivot

Door hinges in India for main doors, interior doors and heavy doors

Quick answer

If you are looking for door hinges in India, choosing the right hinge depends on your door type, weight, design and usage. Different types of hinges are available for interior doors, main doors, heavy doors and modern flush doors. Choosing the right hinge can improve smooth operation, durability and the overall performance of your door.

The five main types of door hinges in India are butt hinges (the everyday standard), ball bearing hinges (for heavy, busy doors), parliament hinges (which let a door open flat against the wall), concealed hinges (hidden when the door is shut) and pivot hinges (for very tall or heavy doors). Pick by door weight, look and how far the door must open.

Match a hinge to your door

Door hinges in India are available in different sizes, materials and finishes, making it easier to choose the right option for different types of doors. Stainless steel butt hinges ahttps://thathardwarestore.com/door-hardware/hinges/re a popular choice for regular wooden doors because they offer good durability and are suitable for everyday use. For heavier doors, ball bearing hinges can provide smoother and more reliable operation.

Set the door weight and the look you want. We will show what fits and where to buy it.

1. How heavy is the door?

30 kg

A solid teak main door is often well above 40 kg. A hollow-core interior door is usually under 20 kg. Weigh it or ask your carpenter.

2. What do you need from the hinge?

  • Standard, visible hinge
  • Hidden, flush look
  • Door must open flat
  • Very tall or wide door

A hinge is a small part that carries the whole weight of your door for decades. Choose wrongly and the door sags, squeaks or jams. For the basics of how the parts fit together, see hinge on Wikipedia. blog2-door-hinge-types

1. Butt hinges

A butt hinge is two rectangular metal plates (leaves) joined by a pin. One leaf goes on the door, the other on the frame. It is the standard hinge on most doors in India and the cheapest to buy.

Best for: Interior wooden doors
Typical size: 4 inch
Per door: 3 hinges

  • Size: 4 inch is the usual choice for interior doors and 5 inch for heavier ones. Measure the door thickness and weight first.
  • Material: stainless steel resists rust in humid homes. Iron and plated brass wear faster in bathrooms and near the coast. Grade 304 is the better pick for bathrooms and balconies.
  • Count: three per door is common practice. Use four on tall or heavy doors.

2. Ball bearing hinges

A ball bearing hinge is a butt hinge with small bearings between the knuckles. The bearings cut friction, so the door swings smoothly and quietly, and the hinge wears far more slowly.

Best for: Heavy and main doors
Typical size: 4 to 5 inch
Per door: 3 to 4 hinges

A plain butt hinge on a heavy door wears at the pin. Then the door drops and starts to rub the frame. A ball bearing hinge takes that load. Our range covers Dorset, Hafele and Hettich, including a Dorset SS 304 fire-rated option. If you are fitting a fire door, check the required rating with your architect first.

Hettich Ball Bearing Butt Hinges — From ₹320

3. Parliament hinges

A parliament hinge is a butt hinge with a wider, projecting knuckle. That gap holds the door further from the frame when it opens. The result is a door that can swing a full 180 degrees and lie flat against the wall. Try the two hinges below.

Best for: Doors that open flat
Key measure: Projection
In our range: Not as standard

  • The projection (the gap) must be bigger than the thickness of whatever the door needs to clear. This guide shows how to measure it.
  • The hinge stands away from the frame, so it is more exposed. On an outer door, add a security bolt so the door cannot be lifted off from outside.

We do not list parliament hinges as standard. Message us on WhatsApp with a photo of your frame and we will tell you what we can source.

4. Concealed hinges

Ball bearing door hinges for smooth and durable door operation

A concealed hinge sits inside the door and frame, so you see nothing from the front when the door is shut. It gives a flush, minimal look for modern interiors. Two families share this name, and buyers often mix them up.

  • Cabinet concealed hinges (clip-on, soft-close, 2D or 3D adjustable) are for kitchens and wardrobes. Hettich, Ozone, Safezone and Royal Art make these. See 3D hinges and 2D hinges.
  • Concealed door hinges are heavier versions for room and main doors. We list a Safezone concealed hinge for main doors, sold as a pair.

Best for: Flush, minimal doors
Check: Weight rating
Fitting: Needs a routed recess

For doors

Safezone Concealed Hinges for Main Door (Pair, 6 inch) — From ₹3,400
For kitchens and wardrobes
Safezone 3D Soft Close Hinges — From ₹240
Ozone 3D Soft Close Hinges OEC451 — From ₹259
Hettich Onsys Soft Close Hinges — From ₹450
Ozone Soft Close Hinges 2D — From ₹440

“Hydraulic hinge” and “auto hinge” mostly describe these cabinet hinges with built-in soft-close or self-closing action. If you are fitting kitchen or wardrobe doors, start with the soft-close range above.

5. Pivot hinges

A pivot hinge does not sit on the door edge. The door turns on a pin at the top and bottom, usually set slightly in from the edge. That lets a door be very tall, very wide or very heavy. Full-height glass or stone doors and large designer entrances often use pivots.

Best for: Oversized entrance doors
Plan at: Design stage
In our range: Not as standard

  • The floor and ceiling must take the load, so plan this early. Fitting a pivot afterwards is hard.
  • Pivot systems are usually paired with a floor spring or closer to control the swing. See our floor springs and door closing systems.
  • Get the weight limit in writing from the maker.

Door hinge price in India

The price of door hinges in India depends on several factors, including the material, brand, size and type of hinge. Basic stainless steel butt hinges are generally more affordable, while ball bearing and concealed hinges can cost more because of their construction, load capacity and additional features. Always compare the specifications before choosing a hinge.

Common mistakes when choosing hinges

  • Using a plain butt hinge on a heavy door. It will sag within a year or two.
  • Choosing iron or plated hinges for a bathroom. They rust.
  • Mixing hinge types on one door. Use the same type and height for all.
  • Ignoring the weight rating on concealed hinges.
  • Fitting parliament hinges on an outside door without a security bolt.

The bottom line

1. Concealed and soft close door hinges for modern doors and cabinets

For most Indian homes: stainless steel butt hinges for light interior doors, ball bearing hinges for the main door and heavy doors, and concealed hinges when the design is flush. Choose parliament or pivot only when the door or frame demands it. Fitting new hinges? A door stopper keeps the door from swinging into the wall and straining them.

FAQs:

1. What are the main types of door hinges?

The five main types are butt hinges, ball bearing hinges, parliament hinges, concealed hinges and pivot hinges. Butt hinges are the everyday standard. The others solve specific problems: heavy doors, wide opening, hidden hardware or oversized doors.

2. Which hinge is best for a main door?

A stainless steel ball bearing hinge is the usual choice because it carries heavy weight and swings smoothly. For a flush, modern main door, a concealed hinge with the right weight rating also works.

3. What is the difference between a butt hinge and a ball bearing hinge?

Both have the same basic shape. A ball bearing hinge has bearings between the knuckles, which reduces friction and wear. It suits heavy or busy doors, while a plain butt hinge suits light interior doors.

4. What is a parliament hinge used for?

A parliament hinge holds the door away from the frame so it can open up to 180 degrees and lie flat against the wall. It suits doors that need full opening or must clear thick frames.

5. What size hinge should I use for a door?

Typically 4 inch for light interior doors and 5 inch for heavier doors. Weight and use matter more than a fixed rule, so confirm with your carpenter.
